As
employers recognize the benefits of reduced health care
costs, reduced absenteeism, increased retention of employees,
increased employee morale and enhanced corporate image,
the number of corporate lactation programs continues
to grow. Babies
'n Business, LLC of
Bethesda, Maryland, is a Lactation Consulting practice
specializing in corporate lactation programs. Babies
'n Business, LLC was
the pioneer in providing such programs in the Washington,
DC area starting in 1993. Our programs are designed to support
the corporate work-life agenda of your company and are customized
to fit your needs.
With
approximately 62% of mothers with children under three participating
in the labor force, more companies are finding the need to provide
the services of a lactation consultant in the workplace. The return
to work following maternity leave is cited by many new mothers as
a barrier to the continuation of breastfeeding. An employer's support
of breastfeeding for nursing mothers can significantly help a woman
balance the demands of work with their desire to continue to breastfeed
her infant. Citing the health benefits to both mother and child, the
American Academy of Pediatrics released guidelines in 1997 recommending
that infants be breastfed up to one year of age.

Jane
Johnston Balkam, PhD, APRN, CPNP, IBCLC
Jane is the owner of Babies 'n Business, LLC .
She received her BSN from Georgetown University and her MSN
from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, and
her PhD specializing in Maternal Child/Breastfeeding
and Human Lactation from the Union Institute & University.
Jane is nationally board certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner
and lactation consultant. She has counseled breastfeeding
mothers for over 20 years. Over the years, Jane has held positions
in nursing education and administration as well as clinical
practice. She has several publications in journals, and
was included in the Sixth Edition of Who’s Who in American
Nursing. Jane is a Fellow of the National Association
of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) and a member
of the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA).
Colleen Prorok,
RN, MSN, IBCLC
Colleen
is a part-time lactation consultant with Babies 'n Business,
LLC and works with our Maryland Corporate clients. She
received her BSN from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY
and an MS in Child Psychiatric Nursing from the University of
Maryland at Baltimore. She has broad experience in nursing and
she has worked as a lactation consultant since 1991 when she
became board certified as a lactation consultant.
Lisa Simon
Lisa
Simon is the Babies 'n Business, LLC Office Manager. She coordinates appointments and schedules
for our Lactation Consultant and handles all our accounting,
breastpump rentals, breastpump sales, inventory, web orders and other duties in the office to ensure the practice's effectiveness and efficiency.
